Willis Reed: An American Basketball Legend
Willis Reed was an American professional basketball player who played 13 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). A two-time NBA champion with the New York Knicks, Reed was named the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 1970 and 1973. He was also a seven-time NBA All-Star and a five-time All-NBA Team selection.

Reed was born on June 25, 1942, in Hico, Texas. He attended Grambling State University, where he was a three-time All-American. Reed was selected by the New York Knicks with the eighth overall pick in the 1964 NBA draft.
Reed quickly became a star for the Knicks, averaging 19.5 points and 14.7 rebounds per game in his rookie season. He helped lead the Knicks to the NBA Finals in 1967, where they lost to the San Francisco Warriors in four games.
Reed's best season came in 1969-70, when he averaged 21.7 points and 14.9 rebounds per game. He led the Knicks to the NBA championship that season, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers in seven games. Reed was named the NBA Finals MVP after averaging 28.3 points and 14.3 rebounds per game in the series.
Reed helped the Knicks win another NBA championship in 1973, defeating the Baltimore Bullets in four games. He was named the NBA Finals MVP again after averaging 23.3 points and 12.3 rebounds per game in the series.
Reed's career was cut short by injuries. He retired from the NBA in 1976 after 13 seasons. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1982.
After retiring from basketball, Reed worked as a television commentator and coach. He was also a successful businessman, owning several car dealerships and restaurants.
Reed died on October 20, 2019, at the age of 77. He is considered one of the greatest basketball players of all time.
Personal Life
Willis Reed was married to Maureen L. Reed for 55 years. They had three children: Willis Jr., Maureen, and Jeffrey. Reed was a devoted family man and enjoyed spending time with his wife and children.
Reed was also a generous philanthropist. He donated millions of dollars to various charities, including the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the United Way.
