Here is a sample chapter from More True Tales From Theatre Press Agent:
The Star Who Refused to Leave Her Dressing Room
I have worked with many demanding stars over the years, but none more so than the legendary actress, Sarah Bernhardt. Bernhardt was known for her temper, her eccentricities, and her refusal to compromise. She was also one of the greatest actresses of all time.
I was working as the press agent for a Broadway production of Bernhardt's play, Camille, when I first encountered her. Bernhardt was already in her 70s, but she was still a force to be reckoned with. She had a commanding presence and a voice that could fill a theatre. She was also very opinionated and did not suffer fools gladly.
One day, during a rehearsal, Bernhardt suddenly announced that she was not feeling well and would not be able to perform that evening. The director was furious, but there was nothing he could do. Bernhardt was the star of the show, and without her, the performance would have to be canceled.
I was sent to Bernhardt's dressing room to try to persuade her to change her mind. I knocked on the door, but there was no answer. I knocked again, louder this time. Finally, the door opened a crack, and Bernhardt's face appeared.
"What do you want?" she demanded.
"Miss Bernhardt, I'm here to see if you're feeling any better," I said.
"I am not feeling well," she said. "I am not going to perform tonight."
"But the show must go on," I said. "The audience is expecting you."
"I don't care," she said. "I am not going out there."
I tried to reason with her, but it was no use. Bernhardt was adamant. She was not going to perform, and that was that.
I went back to the director and told him the news. He was furious. He threatened to fire Bernhardt if she didn't perform. But Bernhardt was unmoved. She said she would rather be fired than go out on stage.
In the end, the director had no choice but to cancel the performance. The audience was very disappointed, but they understood. Bernhardt was a star, and stars are allowed to be divas.
I never worked with Bernhardt again, but I never forgot her. She was a true legend, and she taught me a valuable lesson about the importance of standing up for what you believe in, even when it means ruffling some feathers.
More True Tales From Theatre Press Agent is full of stories like this one. It is a book that will make you laugh, make you cry, and give you a new appreciation for the theatre.
